Congratulations, you are now a youth soccer coach! Despite what people might say, you are not simply a glorified babysitter, in fact, you are the main teacher to these kids when it comes to the beautiful game (no pressure, right?).
Although you might be new to this whole thing, here are five tips for the new youth soccer coach that can go a long way in the long-run.
1. Plan Ahead
A coach has a plan of actions for the whole season at the start of the season. That sounds like a lot of work, but if you prepare properly, this will be a breeze. Make sure your plan outlines what you hope to achieve by the end of the season and how you intend to go about your goal.
2. Your view of the game should be different
Don’t get caught up in the emotions of the game, like a parent will. Keep your cool, you are the coach, and all eyes are on you. Sure, this isn’t the Champions League and your job is on the line, but these kids (and parents) are looking at you as the main source of how to react to calls made by refs. Remember, you should be an observer of the action who keeps your player’s development ahead of the result.
3. Your time is limited
Although you wish this was your full-time job, it’s not. Because of this, you must use all the minutes you have allocated to coaching as productive as possible. If you are doing an activity with your team, make it soccer related, try your best to keep the goofing around to a minimum as you know your time is precious and every second with these kids matter.
4. Set your priorities
Much like number one, you need plan ahead not only for the season but for each training session. Don’t try to accomplish too many things at once in a session. Work on the plan you set up at the start of the season and execute it to perfection.
5. Have fun
Players love to play for a coach that has fun with them. Don’t be so focused on the score or the record, these kids aren’t here to play for a contract, or to lift the World Cup, they are here to learn soccer and your job is to teach, not win. Players will learn more if they do activities they enjoy.
