What does Pelé, Messi, Ronaldo, Romário, Henry, Ibrahimović, Müller, and Rooney all have in common? They just a few of the best strikers to ever play the game of soccer. From fantastic goals, out-of-this-world plays, these guys all made soccer more enjoyable to watch and if it wasn’t for them being who they were, we wouldn’t have those “OMG” moments we all love.
A striker is a finisher, at all cost. They are the pit bulls in front of the box that sniff the goal and itch to make a difference. Here are five tips on being a better striker either for your club team, travel team, or school team.
What does that mean? Score by any means necessary. Scrappy forwards score the most goals. Being scrappy isn’t always glamorous, but it gets the job done. Doesn’t matter how you score, it could be on a rebound, it could be an acrobatic shot as you are falling, or it could just be you shooting a blank and hoping you get a lucky bounce. Shoot your shot, as they say, shoot often and if you can’t find a shot, make one.
Switch around with your fellow forward
Confuse the defense. Talk to your other forward and switch sides once in a while. Keep the defense on their feet at all times.
Stay close to your fellow forward
Communicate and talk with your fellow forwards. Sure, sometimes it’s best to be spread out, but you can make more damage together than apart. If you stick with your guys, you can work together and get the goal. Overlaps and one-twos are two of the easiest plays to do with fellow strikers when you are close and not apart.
Put pressure on the defense
Don’t let the defense pass the ball around in the back. Pressure high and often on the defense and keep them on their heels. By applying pressure, some defenders will not be able to handle it and lose the ball, giving you a high scoring opportunity. Remember, be scrappy.
Use your arms
Use your size and arms to get past defenders to find that shot you are looking for. If you do it quickly enough, the referees will rarely see you use your arms and you will have a better chance at doing what you are made to do, score.
